I have an IMac and ads keep flashing up on the screen, video ads keep playing by themselves and the whole PC has gone a go slow. I am operating OSX 10.9.2 with Maverick
Please can anyone help? What do I do?

Thanks Kurt, really useful and I have done some housekeeping which seems to have removed the ads.
In the process I stumbled into the Activity Monitor, and spotted
Physical Memory: 4.00GB
Memory Used: 3.49
Virtual Memory: 5.42GB
App Memory: 1.58GB
Could lack of memory be a reason to slow down my imac?

2 GB is the absolute minimum to install Mavericks. At least 4 (which you have) is needed for truly reasonable response. If you can, I'd bump it to at least 8.
Since I don't know your downloading habits, I have to kind of guess here. But if you use CNET's download.com, or Softonic, avoid them like the plague from here on out. They've been adding install wrappers to all of the software you download from them. So the adware gets installed along with whatever app you get from them.
Both are nothing but a repository for collected freeware, shareware, etc. If you see something on either site you'd like to try, go directly to the site of the company or person who wrote the software and get it from them.
As a "for instance", here's EasyFind at download.com. If it's something you'd like to try, then do a web search for EasyFind. In this case, the top result is the site of the company that wrote the software and can be downloaded from them without getting the extra garbage.
