Will my mac burn dual layer dvds?

I have a late 2009 macbook, and I just want to be sure before I purchase them, that it can burn 8.5 gb dual layer dvds. Perhaps someone out there has more experience than I do in this area?

Yes. Your late 2009 MacBook is technically capable of burning DVD-R DL or DVD+R DL

Storage

8x slot-loading SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/
CD-RW)
Maximum write: 8x DVD-R, DVD+R; 4x DVD-R DL (double layer), DVD+R DL (double layer), DVD-RW, DVD+RW; 24x CD-R; 10x CD-RWMaximum read: 8x DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-ROM; 6x DVD-ROM (double layer DVD-9), DVD-R DL (double layer), DVD+R DL (double layer), DVD-RW, and DVD+RW; 24x CD

That said, 8GB is a LOT of data to write. If the burn doesn't complete without errors and/or doesn't verify, don't be totally shocked.

  • Burn while plugged in to the power adapter, not while on battery power alone.
  • Don't run any other apps at the same time.
  • Reboot just before beginning the burn.
  • Free up as much RAM as possible, by shutting down other 'startup' apps that you don't need.
  • Select a slow(er) burn speed, 2x or 2.4x instead of 4x Yes a 2x burn speed takes twice as long as a 4x burn speed.
