To library or not to library

Hi

I've a bunch to think about before opening 10.1 (still have 10.0.9 available).

To Library or not to library? If I open 10.1 and reject upgrading projects and events, life will go on just with other improvements in software accessible, right?

I'm thinking I almost would prefer not to create libraries since I often use media from old projects in new projects and don't want to be copying from one library to another. (I'm a writer—gee, I hate to say poet, I write bits—who generally uses media to illustrate, help tell the story, add depth/layers to voiceover, etc.)

Can one simply link to a file in a different library? I think it has to be copied.

Can one add old events and projects to an existing library?

Often some of that old media will be on other old drives and I don't want to copy that into libraries, either.

If I create one big library then I imagine it could get messy to view and taxing on FCPX.

It may be best for my purposes to be able to still move events and projects around.

It really depends on whether you want to experience any further development of the software; and if you're the optimistic type you would expect that development to represent progress and improvements. It's very hard to imagine Apple ever reverting to the old, separate project and events model.

There is an enormous amount that has been written and filmed about the ins and outs of the new library model. Even better, a lot has been written and filmed by folks (including Apple) who know what they're talking about and who've made their expertise available for free. It's worth a search.

FWIW, I have both versions – on two separate partitions. Not because I don't like the library model, but because the other partition's OS doesn't support 10.1. Most of my media lives outside of events so it's pretty easy for me to access old media for new projects. Something you may want to consider.

Thanks, Russ!

I appreciate your views. I have been reading and watching, maybe too much, am slightly confused, just wanted some confirmation.

Much of my media is outside events, too. That, I believe, can just be linked to.

But can one link to a file in a different library? I think it has to be copied.

Can one add old events and projects to an existing library? Doesn't seem like it. If you update some later it just creates a new library.
