    Back up your data, click here, and read the entire page. Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004.

    Pay particular attention to whether your model can run Mavericks or not. If it's old enough for 10.5 Leopard, then it may (or may not) be too old.

    You'll need to buy Snow Leopard from an Apple Store first. That's worth doing even if your Mac can go no further.

     

    If you can run Mavericks, then as Neil says, you'll need to update most of the third-party apps that you use, as the versions you have may not work well or at all on Mavx.
