Feb 4, 2016 10:54 AM in response to dmc28by lllaass,Could be that the USB2 port is not supping enough power.
Some drives have a connector for an AC adopter power plug.
You can also get y-cables that take power from two USB ports. What you use depends upon the port on the drive

Does the drive work/seen in another computer?

Feb 4, 2016 2:37 PM in response to lllaassby lawrenceoliver,I have Seagate Backup Plus that isn't showing up on my laptop, but shows up on two different iMacs just fine. It's powered by an AC adaptor, and I tried a different brand new USB cable, (although like I said it shows up with the old USB on the iMacs), but still nothing. It doesn't show up in my Disk Utility or my System Report..nowhere.. but only on this computer. ??
Also, I just tried a different Seagate Backup Plus in the same USB port on my laptop and it shows up fine! So confused. Any help is welcome.
(Macbook Pro from late 2013 running OS X 10.11.3 El Capitan, 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7)

Feb 5, 2016 4:47 AM in response to lllaassby lloydv2,lllaass,
You were the only helpful post I've found through days of searching. I'm having the same issue with my brand new seagate. I can see it in the System Report but can't see it in disk utility or anywhere else. I've tried everything else, making sure External Hardrives is checked in preferences, and everything else the other responses have suggested. So if I can see it in the system report, how can I make it appear in disk utility or anywhere else? Please help!

Feb 7, 2016 7:48 PM in response to DisneyWorldby nordwall,Hey everyone!
I had the same problem that it won't connect. What was working for me was to connect the power from a usb outlet then to the computer and now i can see it. I guess it didn't have power to connec propertly.

Feb 28, 2016 5:18 PM in response to lloydv2by heeheehaha,Stand seagate vertically and with the back of the device to you lean it at a slight angle against a box or something solid.

Mar 22, 2016 10:23 PM in response to DisneyWorldby SleepyNinja,As crazy as it sounds heeheehaha is correct. I had all the same issues as the previous individuals after I dropped my external while it was plugged in and spinning. Couldn't get it to show up anywhere except System Report. Stood it up vertically with the cord in the air and now it showing up and working again. Who woulda thought.

Apr 8, 2016 10:16 PM in response to DisneyWorldby ALapuz,I have the same problem with my 2TB Seagate external HDD.
I was copying file to it when my iMac suddenly restarted.
Then the Seagate won't show in Finder nor in disk utility. But it is showing in the System Report.
I borrowed another USB 3.0 but still won't show in Finder.
Then I opened Disk Utility and it is taking time to load.
I can see the hardisk indicator that it is being read.
Not more than 15 mins, the Seagate showed up in the list.
Then I tried in Finder and it appeared.
Maybe by the time the computer restarted, it was trying to recover the disk internally.
But it cannot be finished simpnce I keep on plugging ang unplugging it to different ports.
It is now working. Hope this helps.
Patience, my friends.

May 2, 2016 1:48 PM in response to SleepyNinjaby bdcs64,Unbelievably, this "stood it up vertically with the cord in the air and now it showing up and working again" worked for my Seagate Freeagent Go Pro drive.
Thank you for suggesting!
