I can't record MIDI - the track is armed but when I press record the record button flashes and doesn't record. It's only happening in one particular arrangement

Do you have AutoPunch enabled?
Command click in the bottom half of the Ruler to turn it off

Hi thanks for your help - I've tried turning 'Allow Quick Auto Punch' off on the Record menu but this doesn't change anything. I can't actually record with audio either but it's only on this one project.
I'm not sure what you mean by the Ruler! Where is that?
