Unable to accept or decline event invitations....buttons don't even appear?

When I'm invited to an event, I receive an email notification, and it is visible in my calendar, but when I open the event dialogue box to reply, I am not given the option to "Accept, Maybe, or Decline." Those buttons don't even appear. How do I fix this? Am I not signed in properly?
