I have just upgraded to an iPhone 5c which I had planned to give to my daughter. Unfortunately my service provider (three) can only provide in white whereas my daughter has her heart set on the pink version. Are there companies out there who can change the casing easily or do I need to opt for a tacky cover???

Not if you want to maintain your warranty and the ability to have it serviced by Apple. Buy a case for it.
Or get a skin, of which there are a multitude of colors, images and patterns. I use Gelaskins, but there are a number of other skin companies.

There are no user serviceable in an iPhone.
Altering the iPhone, opening the iPhone or allowing others to will void your warranty.
If you are not happy with the color-buy a case or as recommended get a "skin".
