What to you mean "locked to iTunes"? Locked how?

One week ago, I tried to update phone software. Did everything as usual. After phone went thru 50 minute update, message came back that phone is in restore mode. Phone screen on shows I tune logo & plug in cable symbol. I went to AT&T store , with no help. I just got off land line with AT&T support & repeated 1 hr plus segment to repeat same update. I have unloaded I tunes, reloaded I tunes & repeated process of upgrading without success.
AT&T technical support says phone is locked with I tunes from Apple, a software issue.
I do not want to upgrade phone .

The iPhone is in recovery mode, and you'll need to restore it:

If restoring fails, the iPhone probably has a hardware problem and you'll need to take or send it to Apple for diagnosis and service.
