new battery won't charge nor will macbook run on ac alone?

I just got a used 2008 macbook, the seller said it would need a new battery. After using it for 2 hours the battery died. It won't work with just the magsafe ac, I ordered a new battery I put it in & it started but it won't charge the light stays green. My husband updated it now it turns amber for a few seconds then goes green & shuts off.I can't even use it just plugged in w/ no battery. Any ideas???

let me guess, an Ebay battery? or something like that?

If so, theyre junk, and thats your issue

those batteries also do not contain the adaptive charging system chip

Yes, it's a battery from eBay, I suppose he should"ve done some research smh. Shouldn't I still be able to use it plugged in w/ no battery? Thank for your reply

Bingo.

Depending on who made it, (and there are a LOT), most dont have the microchip to communicate with the computer which the genuine Apple battery has.

Its like inserting the "correct part" into a computer, that however cant communicate.

Leaving the macbook 'scratching its head' , so to speak. 😉

Contact Apple for appt. for getting a battery installed.
