Mac DVD-player does not mount/play DVD-movie on external DVD player - how to solve the problem?

Mac DVD-player (OS 10.6.8) does not mount/play movie-DVD on external LaCie DVD player connected by FireWire 400 - how to solve the problem?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), LaCie extern DVD-Drive/FireWire400

Check with LaCie for firmware updates.

Thank you, I did check it and I have the newest firmware available --> does not solve the problem. More likely, itt seems to be a DVD-player problem. Is there any solution?
