Can I backup without using wifi?

So, I just had the unfortunate computer overheat and crash problem. I have also been cheap and not invested in an external hard drive to bacjk up my computer. I'm in college and my campus does not allow additional wi+fi routers on the network. Is there a way I can use the Time Capsule to back up my computer without using wi+fi? I Plan on using it for my home network in the future so instead of buying something else now and a router later I figured it would be cheaper to have that now and use it for the next several years.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

The answer is yes, but it depends on how you are connecting to your network now. And if your Mac is one of those wonderful ethernet free versions apple makes now.

If you connect to internet via wireless, then you can connect to the TC by ethernet. It is now and forevermore a network device.. you cannot use USB. but it is possible to setup a secondary IP network. It is complicated a bit and the TC might complain that it is not connected to internet. But possible.

I would note however.. it is slower than external drive. It is far less reliable.. and it is far more expensive.

You can buy a 1 or 2 TB tiny 2.5" drive that works really well.. and if your computer is later model with USB3 it will be almost as fast as internal disk.

If you wish to go ahead and purchase the TC tell me what IP range the current internet connection give you so I can work out how to setup the TC.

I have the June 2012 model 13" MacBook pro so I have an ethernet port. I don't know what IP range is but the IP address is a 10.2.xx.xxx. I think thats the correct last 2 sets of numbers but i can gauruntee the 10.2.

And that is connected by wireless to your Uni or college system??

Also, do you think It would be cheaper to purchase an external hard drive now and router later in the future?

Much cheaper.. much better and more reliable, and easier all round.
