iphone in recovery mode, device not found on iTunes.

tried to download ios7.1 but then suddenly prompted to connect iphone to itunes. Did so but iTunes cannot find device and suggests I need to restore it as phone is in 'recovery mode'. Imagine this would mean I would lose all my data. Symbol on phone won't go away. Any solutions?
