    I totally agree with you. My father has an iPhone 3GS and an iPad 2 he uses to FaceTime his grandsons. I kept iOS6 on both devices because it would be a kind of annoyance to use different UIs for him. Both devices are more than he needs and he is perfectly happy with them. Now, overnight, the only option I have to offer him is update the iPad to iOS 7 so he can talk to his grandsons again but his phone and tablet will have a different UIs. He does not accept to buy a new phone just because it perfectly fits his needs and he does not share the opinion that we must thrown away something that is working perfectly, he argues he wants to protect the environment (what I agree).

    My loved Apple has put me in a very difficult situation, overnight, without notice.

    So, use two different iOSs.  I have a 3GS running 6.1.6, and a 4 & 5 running iOS 7.1.1.  And I have no issues between the two.

    Tell me, what are the differences that are going to cause him problems?  You still tap on an app to open it.  You still tap on your home button to go back to the home screen. You still double-tap the home button to access the multi-taskign function.

    There are some added functions to iOS 7, but those are mostly optional.

    First of all I d like to thank you for expressing my feelings as well. My wife loves her IOS6 and expressed on multiple occasions that she does not want to change habits. FaceTime between us doesn't work anymore. Unfortunately we live in the brave new world. Windows XP are not safe anymore. Microsoft is not recommending to use their internet explorer for people still running it. My bank sent me replacement credit card - cause "major retailer" was hacked ( and now we know that every retailer is compromised - SSL is not safe ). I would not be surprised to find out that FaceTime on IOS 6 03 is not secure anymore (pure speculation at that point).. As an IT Guy I dual boot all my personal computers, so I can always find a program for any specific task, hence I am still in need of XP. problem is that we have no say in a matter.

    According to Apple's TOS, they can take any service off line on purpose or for repair and return or not at any time, without any notice. Next time you setup new iPhone read and weep. For now - any alternatives besides Skype and Google Hangouts?

    Apparently this is due to an expired certificate in older iOS.  Apple has issues this document

    For the time being the only solution is to update the iOS.

    As previoulsy posted, a new iOS update has been revealed few days ago, which solve the Facetime issue :

    @Walidou:

    Think you misunderstood something. The latest iOS update has nothing to do with the FT problem. The iOS6 FaceTime failure is and will not be fixed. Only option is to move to iOS7 (where this specific problem never existed).

    That can NOT be true. Our phones and computers are updated to ios7.1 and NO ONE in my family can connect to FaceTime.   What you shared said that would not be affected, it's obvious that we are.  Pretty much disgusted with Apple because of this issue. I would like to know what the real problem is though.

    The problem with software bugs is that there is not always one "it" that causes the problem.

    The issue with failing calls to and from iOS6 devices has finally been confirmed by Apple, although it has and will not be fixed. Only fix is to upgrade to the latest iOS version (currently 7.1.1).

    If none of the from and to devices you tried has iOS6 on it, than this partucial problem does not affect you.

    Clearly that doesn't mean that there is no other problem with Facetime that might occur in your specific setup.

    What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?

    I have five iDevices running ios 6, I refuse to update mainly because I have several external batteries that I bought to charge my iDevices that will not work with ios 7.  Why should I upgrade and lose the investment that I made with all these batteries when there was no hint that it would not be supported in the future.  Apple is using tactics used by companies in desperation.  The king is dead, long live the king. Samsung is the new King.

    @alphacarbon

    Just curious, what makes these external batteries not work under iOS7?

    my understanding is that in an effort to stop third party electric chargers from being used ios 7 also is not compatible with many external batteries that works perfectly with ios 6 . For example I have two maxboost batteries for iphone 4s that are not supported in ios 7.  Also two Anker batteries that I am not sure if they are supported or not on ios 7
