My iPod was stolen, found with the app., The address was a Radio Shack that reset it for the thieves FREE!, and didn't get any of their names! So my Question is why can't it be tracked if they ever re-hook up to iTunes or Wi-Fi? S/N should show up?Right

😢 My iPod was stolen, found,(with the app.), The address was a Radio Shack that reset it for the thieves FREE!, and didn't get any of their names! Now it can't be tracked any longer So my Question is, Why can't it be tracked if they ever re-hook up to iTunes or Wi-Fi? It's S/N should show up? Right? *Find my iPhone* claims it can't be tracked after it's been wiped clean! Why? The S/N still shows up everytime it's hooked to iTunes, doesn't it?

iPod touch (4th generation), iOS 6.1.6

Since your ipod that was stolen was a 4th generation once it has been reset then i'm sorry it can not be tracked any longer the only way it can be tracked with the s/n is if you filed a police report and if the thieves ever get a pawn loan from a pawn shop then they are screwed because whenever a pawn loan is done there is three copies made of the transaction one for the person pawning the item one for the pawn shops records and one to be sent to the police to be checked againist stolen goods reports. Now if it was a 5th gen ipod it would have reqiured an apple id for it to be reset or since you did have the find my iphone (ipod) app on it you could have wiped it remotely and set it up to display a message and play a tone. Once again i'm sorry that your ipod was stolen

That did not answer my question! Whenever you hook any ipod to itunes,it shows the serial number for that ipod! So then why can't it be tracked to the next person that hooks-up to itunes? By either itunes or find my iphone app? I don't understand why itunes can't track a stolen ipod if its ever hooked up to itunes again any time in the future?

Sounds and looks like you work for Apple and not for customers! Thanks for no answers from either of you! PS- I don't think any car dealership sells stolen vehicles, The VIN or SERIAL NUMBER is always checked! Just like apple should do with their products, especially when the serial number comes up right in front of them! Just like it does for the app "find my iphone"!!!

The serial number is not sent to Apple when someone connects a device to iTunes or to WiFi. And in any case, Apple as was said does not track stolen devices, in part probably since they have no way of knowing with any certainty who is the legal owner of a given device. Apple provides the Find My iPhone service to track missing iPhones, and Activation Lock to prevent someone from using a stolen device later.

And no, lllaass does not work for Apple. These are user-to-user support forums.

Regards.

thanks alot, Rickmn! i told you exactly what would happen once an ipod is stolen and since you ipod was a 4th gen i was right about the way it was stolen as you described. Its not my problem that you can't understand what me or lllaass say's about it. and to answer what said about lllaass and I is comepletely basisless i know i don't work for apple and what varjak paw also said lllaass doesn't work for apple either. now, if you had a 5th gen ipod you could have wiped the stuff that was on the ipod also locked it and displayed a message on the ipod through the find my iphone app now with the 5th gen ipod in order for the ipod to be reset it now requires the apple id that it is connected to, also when the ipod is connected to itunes it does display info for the ipod for your infomation only it is up to you to write down the serial number and keep it in a safe place if it is stolen, and as lllaass said apple does not track ipods if they are stolen it is up to you to report an item stolen to the police once it is stolen now if it has a serial number that is one bit of infomation that the police would require now don't take it out on me or lllaass for you inabilaty for not reporting it as stolen to the police or writing down the serial number so you could give it to the police so if the item should show up as a pawn loan the police could have tracked the people that stole it in the first place

Don't say that Apple doesn't receive the serial number when an iPod is connected! How is it they have all serial numbers for every device me or my kids every hooked to iTunes, including one damaged one and one sold one? You see I do have the serial number, its just trying to narrow it down to the one that's stolen. and by the way I did report it stolen to the police, I just have to figure out which serial number belongs to the stolen iPod! If Apple doesn't track stolen Apple products, They should!!!!

Apr 18, 2014 12:29 PM in response to Rickmn

Apple has all the serial numbers because the dealer you purchased the devices from reports the sale, the serial number, and who they sold the device to. Again, the device does not report the serial number to Apple when the device is connected to iTunes. Whether you believe me or not is up to you.

If you just can't figure out the serial number of the stolen device, perhaps this will help:

If you can't figure out from the available information which is the one that was stolen, that's your issue for not keeping better track of your property.

If Apple doesn't track stolen Apple products, They should!!!!

That's not the responsibility of any manufacturer. As I said, there's no way in practicality that they can.

No! I never said it was their responsibility! And Yes The Devices Do!! It was confirmed to me after being on the phone for about 5 hours today with several Techs and Support Supervisors that it is possible, but in my case it's not so easy! My hard drive on the PC I synced it on went out a few weeks ago, and that would be about the only place that my S/N would be stored.Turns out none of the 3 devices on my device list are the stolen iPod! 1 my youngest son owns, 1 my other son sold and has not been registered to the new owner yet, and the last one was my old iPod 4th Gen. that was wrecked. The stolen one I must not have registered when I first backed it up from my old iPod back up from iTunes. So now I hunt down who I bought it used from a year and a half ago to see if it's still registered under their name. I'm still working on it, and i'll eventually find the thief, even if it takes me more than a year. I have gotten way more info today than you could have given me in a month, with a lot better attitudes and information than you or lllaass ever had for me! So keep your links and your know-it-all responses for the others that actually think you know something! I'm done chatting in this community about this! Turned out to waste more time than anything, responding to you two! And ALL the Apple Employee's I've talked too the last couple days have actually went WAY out of their way to try to figure out some other way and have helped me Extremely! I Applaud Them All, and Thank Them All for their Help, Understanding, and Kindness! Adios Amigo's I've got alot more work to do! 😮 This commun. is now CLOSED!
