I have alot of songs that I downloaded from CD's ove the years and my wife got me an Iphone a couple of weeks ago. I was able to get songs that I purchesed on my Iphone, but not songs from CD's.
Is that a problem?

So presumably, you have purchased music from the iTunes Store, using the iPhone and without using iTunes on a computer.
To put any other music on the iPhone, you need to have the music in your iTunes Library and then Sync the phone with the Library. Have you done that?
The article you came here from explains what you need to do to get music that is already on your computer into iTunes. So, have you managed that?
Yes I have downloaded songs from cd's to my itunes library and have even downloaded them to my Ipod Nano. But when I try to download the library to my iphone by synching all that comes across are the songs that I've puchased from itunes.
Since iTunes sees the iPhone as a different device to the iPod nano, when the iPhone is connected to the iTunes Library, check the iPhone/Music pane and make sure that you have the options for which music will be synced, set as you want them.
Perhaps the iPhone is currently set to Sync only Recently Purchased, or similar.
I can't find any setting on the phone that says to sync only recently purcharsed or anything else. I plug the iphone into my computer and try to sync the iphone and the option is grayed out.
I'm guessing that means I can't download the songs that I downloaded from CD's to my itunes library to my iphone.
Kind of *****....But there are bigger problems in the world.

If Sync Music/Selected playlists, artists, album and genres has been selected, then make sure that you have also selected the music you want on the phone.
Alternatively, choose Sync Music/Entire music library.
