Q: Where is my external Hard Drive ?

After downloading the latest software I am unable to locate my external drive when hooked up to the USB ports...........there used to be a spot that automatically popped up once the external drive was hooked up.  Now there is nothing that shows up or allows me to access it.  Any help is very much appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

    Choose Computer from the Finder's Go menu. If desired, choose Preferences from the Finder menu, click on the General tab, and check the box for external drives.

    Hi Niel,

    So I did exactly what you said and also re-started my laptop and nothing pops up in the side bar anywhere like it used to.  This all changed after I donwloaded the new OS mavericks software.

    Click on the Sidebar tab of the Finder's preferences and check the box for it, or drag it into the sidebar.

    Did that as well, it is selected and does not add anything to my side bar.  I have tried both of my External hard drives too.

    Now I did try my other Toshiba external drive and nothing.  Then I tried my seagate and it pops up?  wierd because I used the Toshiba yesterday before I downloaded the new software?

    and its not the cable because I used the seagate cable and still nothing on both Toshiba Externals.

    If they show up in the Computer window, drag them into the sidebar. If not, open the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and mount them; if needed, repair them first.

    Disk Utility says it can not repair the disk..........what would of caused this?  If I reset the external drive I will loose all the data that i have on it........

    says it has an unmounted partition.  If I mount it then I will loose all data as well correct?

    You won't be able to mount a damaged partition; erasing it will erase its contents. If you don't have the files on it stored anywhere else, use a data recovery product such as the ones listed here, or a tool such as DiskWarrior to repair the drive.

    Thanks Niel, i will am workinh on recovering all of my data as I type.  i guess once I recover the files I can re-format the drive and then reload them onto it.

    ok sure will.  I will probably never buy a Toshiba External anymore thats for sure.  Seems my seagates never have any issues like this one.  I do video production and store a lot of clips on externals.  Cant risk loosing all the footage.

    The same issue happened to my Macbook Pro last March. It was due to full disk and suddenly I can no longer boot it up.

     

    Just like me, if you have Windows in bootcamp partition, you can try to boot from there and diagnose the issue. The hard disk that time showed that it was damaged and can no longer get mounted. So I decided to just erase the content using the Disk Utility (this is available when your in recovery mode). Luckily, after that, my disk is again healthy and I don't have to replace it just yet. Right now, I am able to use my Macbook with no issue.

     

    I am not sure of this, but you if you decided to erase your disk partition using the Disk Utility, there's an option called 'Fast' where you will have a high possibility of recovering your data.
