Brother HL-2240D Duplex Printing problems. Help?

I just got the borther HL-2240D printer. I am running OS 10.5.8. I really want to use the duplex printing function of this printer however I am running into some troubles. First I installed the drivers from the accompanying cd and the when I tried to print the duplex option in the layout menu was greyed out. After doing some digging I manually uninstalled all of the brother drivers and downloaded and installed the ones from the website. After rebooting and manually adding the printer again and making sure to have the correct driver selected in System Preferences>Print & Fax>Brother HL-2240 Seriers>Options & Supplies (it kept wanting to use the plain HL-2240 driver not the HL-2240D) the option for duplex printing is now no longer greyed out. I can pick two-sided printing. It is toggled on. Yet, whatever I print still comes out only one-sided. Any ideas?

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.

Any devices that previously appeared in your Printer List and Fax List will need to be added again after resetting the printing system.

I'll try the generic driver. I had previously tried the 2270DW driver to no avail. Yes, that is where I got the drivers originally. I have tried both the 2240 Cups as well as the 2240D Cups. Neither work despite both showing the availible option for duplex printing.

Yes, I had already checked on the firmware. I downloaded and tried to install a firmware upgrade but recieved the message that the firmware was already up to date.
