Apple HDMI cable question

Hi

I want to buy an Apple HDMI cable to mirror my ipad on my TV.

I'll be using it to watch movies via VLC (on ipad) on my TV.

While mirroring a movie, is it possible to lock my ipad and continue watching that movie on TV?
