You need to remove some of your user files to make room. Either back them up to an external drive or delete them. After moving to the Trash, make sure you empty the Trash.
Movies and pictures generally use the most space.

Click on the word Finder and select Preferences.
Slect General, and click the box for Hard disks so it is checked.
Your start up disk will be shown on the screen, usually on the top right.
