I have a late 2009 macbook and I'm running OSX 10.5.8, I was thinking to upgrade to 10.7.5 and I was wondering will it affect my macs performance in a postive or negative way...

Any OS upgrade will require you first purchase and install Snow Leopard from the Apple Store.
All future purchases will happen via the App Store application. If supported by your machine you can upgrade from 10.6.8 to Mavericks at no charge.
Any 2007 or later Mac will support 10.7.5.

You should since you are reading this tip from 10.6.8 or earlier, read this tip first before updating anything:
Mavrick??
My Advise is not to get tempted by the word "free" and download Mavrick.
1- Painflully slow
2- Not easy to un-install (Don't know why). Its like you in then no way out
3- ...etc
Had to find the original Mac CD to un-install Mavrick but then had to copy every thing to an external drive......despite all that effort, I lost heaps of valubel info from the updating process. Avoid!
Glad to be back to some speed where i don't have to wait minutes for my computer to start loading pages :-)
spending a couple of dollars will give you a peace of mind.
I upgraded from OS X 10.6.3 by the way.
