after the most recent software update to 10.9.2 i get a recurring message saying "Insufficient application memory". what is the cause ? and what is the remedy?

to take the recurring message at its word, the cause of insufficient application memory is that a particular app requires more free RAM than is currently available, and the remedy would be providing it with more free RAM, either by closing other opened apps or by upgrading the amount of RAM in your MacBook Pro.
