Weird graphical artefacts -- black squares

Hi all,

I've got this weird graphics artefact that I sometimes see on my MBPro17. It's hard to describe, so I made a screenshot:

(ignore the slight fuzzyness; that's just jpeg compression)

In this case, the boxes are black, but they're often red, or sometimes other colours. It only happens when I'm getting the graphics card to do something "difficult", eg expose with 100+ windows, 3d application (particularly if the 3d app doesn't have focus).

Anyone seen this before, or know what to do?

MacBook Pro 17", Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Yes, I've seen that on my newly replaced MacBook Pro 15". It happens randomly, maybe once a day. I've had my logic board replaced last week and I've just noticed it started happening about one day later. It seems to have been happening about once every 4-5 hours or so.

I'm not sure if it's hardware related or OS X 10.4.7 related, since I'd only been running 10.4.7 for about 3 days before I brought my Macbook Pro in for service.

Any ideas?

Okay, definitely not 10.4.7. I did a complete wipe of my HD and installed using the new 10.4.6 install disks they gave me when my main board was replaced. It locked up during the install itself. 😟
