Yes. Same problem here. ATV1. Restored. Unplugged. Resynched. Nothing fixes it. Didn't this happen about a year and a half ago as well?

Same problem here with my ATV gen. 1. When I click on iTunes store in the settings, it says I am connected, but no menu for renting films... It seems to be a chronic problem. Has anyone contacted Apple about this?

Latest Apple TVs are quite useless, I need to wait 2h before can watch a moview. Apple return us support to the 1st gen Apple TV, the only one which actialy works great.

One useful hack that someone else posted here solved 1 of the 2 problems for me. If you enable parental controls and disallow rentals, playback of rented or purchased movies works fine and the navigation ceases to be jumpy.

The issue with this solution is you still won't have access to iTunes store from ATV. Rather, you have to buy or rent items from your desktop computer running iTunes and then either sync (purchased items) or transfer from desktop to ATV using a one click step in iTunes.

Same issue here in Boston, MA area.  Noticed a tv blinking amber light, then no access to iTunes movies or TV shows via Internet.  My movies on the atv HD play, but with a stutter as if resolving stream speed.  Ran diagnostics and my atv is "working correctly".  Initially thought HD was crashing, now not sure.  Replaced cr 2032 battery on remote on the off chance that might be the culprit, same issue.  Running 3.0.2 up-to-date software.  Apple, are you aware of this issue??

BTW, We are not ALL running crystal or other third-party software.

Adding my voice to the rest of the people who have lost iTunes access on their aTV 1G. We're in Canada.

The weird parental guidance trick does seem to stabilize local network use, but I'd still like a proper fix.

The 2nd generation aTV is working fine.

    Very odd indeed.

Same here. Had to put up with subtitles getting stuck on movies I had rented. Now no movies at all. Hope this gets fixed quick.

Here too, Sao Paulo Brazil, I am unable to rent any movies or TV Shows or whatever , can't listen to internet radios, only Youtube works. I have done everything possible, resetings and factory restores etc. and nothing ! I only get the message "There are no unwatched movies on your Apple TV". So it seems that Apple decided that I already watched all the movies I am allowed to.  Probably they want me to purchase a brand newf  Apple TV and throw this one in the garbage. They could have told us this in the propper manner. Coudn't they ?

There is a workaround for the subtitle issue on rented movies. Start the movie and wait 5-10 seconds. Press Menu to back out of the movie. Then start the movie again and select Resume Playing. This makes the subtitle box go away.

    Where are Apple???

Next time I'm tempted to buy an Apple product I'll remind myself how they have ignored this problem and treated their customers with contempt.

    >>> Can you point to any other computing technology in your house that is still in active use and predates 2007?

    Actually, yes:

    - 2004 Powerbook G5 (son uses it to watch movies, play older games, surf net, and general "hacking" around)

    - 2005 iBook G4 (see above but substitute "daughter" for "son")

    - 2006 HP laptop running Ubuntu (wife uses it to surf, post blog updates, etc)

    - 2004 iPod (I use it at work)

    - 2006 Mac Mini (itunes media server)

    - 2005 HP laptop (MythTV media server)

    - 2002 Cisco switch

    - 2005 Airport Express

    - 2005 Lexmark Laser printer

    - Countless IDE hard disks 80-120GB in size used for various tasks

    - Sega Dreamcast, PS2, and original Xbox (my kids still play the heck out of them).

    - 2002 Gateway Solo laptop running Puppy Linux (sits in my garage with plastic covering the keyboard; I use it to look stuff up while I'm working on my tractor, car, woodworking projects, etc. - why risk ruining something else when this works perfectly?)

    - 2003/2004 Pentium 3 desktop running pfsense

    - If Apple hadn't dropped updates to the original iPhone, I'd still be using it ;-)

Look, I get it.... I almost never complain about stuff like this but for whatever reason, this struck a nerve with me.  I don't subscribe to the "throw away" mentality (as evidenced by my list above).  When stuff breaks around my house, I fix it and when its "no longer supported", I find alternative uses.

    Just my two cents.

..Yes. this is a serious drag and a major inconvenience for those that rely on ATV for movies. (like me)

HOWEVER: IT HAS ONLY BEEN 4 DAYS-- over Easter, no less! My gosh. Why is everyone assuming Apple is going to bail on all the 1st gen ATV devices? When have they ever done something like that? That's simply ludicrous to assume the worst in this case.

All these "treating us with disdain" and "last apple product I'll ever buy." Good grief. Have a modicum of patience and see where the dust settles before burning them at the stake.
