Same problem here in Brazil, any clues?

When I tried to watch the rented movies they froze.

Tried rebooting a couple of times, and I even reset and lost everything. Does anybody have an answer?

    Hi FastmarcJa,

I've done a little (very little) vba programming and the part of each project which took up the most time was falsifying (idiot-proofing) code - trying to reproduce every single error which might happen and then change or add code to prevent the errors from happening. Based on Joshua's comment I'd say Apple has updated their iTunes servers and there has been an unintended (horrible) consequence affecting only ATV1's.

    Regards,

    Mitchys

Im just guessing at the constant connection idea. Im a programmer so I can postulate some ideas. It could also just be that it is occasionally trying to connect to iTunes while you have an internet connection but it has a programmed looped that runs forever until a connection is established and once that connection is made it tells all the upper areas to show the top movies and tv shows you can buy/rent. So the loop itself may not be trying to constantly connect but check if a connection has been made. And since the connection is never made, it just eats CPU cycles.

Again these are just ideas. 10 years ago when I was in school, it was sort of a programmer joke to get someone to run a program that would run an infinite number of loops to crash/freeze/slow down their computer. So this sluggishness is just reminding me of that.

But someone checking their internet traffic would be a good start at knowing if it is trying to constantly get connection to Apple servers.

I am posting this mainly to confirm to Apple (if they are listening) that this is a widespread problem, and I also because it just feels better to share.

I am having the same issues as others: will not access iTunes, the ATV responds in a jittery fashion to use of the remote, can still access internet on ATV and can access iTunes store with all of my desktop and laptop computers.

    !st gen ATV

all software upgrades up to date

    location: B.C. Canada

Have tried all the usual things short of factory reset to no avail

It's Good Friday, so no Apple support here in Canada today.

So much for watching movies on my birthday on my home theatre...

@joshuarayer: I had come to the same conclusion. It's the only thing I can think of as to why it's running so slow. I even told tech support that I thought that's what it was.

I think I remember seeing a few people reporting here that it's affecting their Atv2 & Atv3 as well, so hopefully that will speed up the response.

Having the same situation in Ontario Canada. AppleTV 1st Generation. I noticed my Network connection lights flashing as if something was being downloaded. Went around the house, shutting computers, iPads, iPods off until the flashing modem stopped. It was the Apple TV. Yesterday my Apple TV ate up 3 G of download capacity. Part of it would have been restoring my Apple TV and then downloading the software upgrade.

I would suspect leaving the Internet connection and just signing out of your itunes account on the Atv would break this connection and stop the cycle that causes the stuttering.

    Yes.

I have tried disconnecting by turning my modem off and it does help with the playback issue.

It appeared to me that my ATV was communicating something across the Internet whilst playing a video.

    Don't know what or why.

Same issue here in the UK with 1st Gen AppleTV.

If this is planned obsolescence then I won't be buying another Apple TV, I'll take my money elsewhere.

    Thanks Fhbr.

I did exactly the same thing and concluded it was, still is, the ATV, even when logged out of the iTunes store.

Exact same scenario in Mexico City. This can't be planned obsolecense can it?

Apple don't leave us ganging and face this issue and help us.

Steve wouldn't be happy with this situation... :(

Just to expand the geography of the problem a tiny bit (as I haven't seen my area mentioned yet), I'm in the Boston, Massachusetts, USA area. 1st gen, 160MB, working fine until a day or two ago. Haven't called Apple Support yet.
