What is the modern way to put captions on QuickTime movies?

For putting captions on movies, the only reasonable format that QuickTime Pro 7 seems to accept is .scc. QuickTime Pro 7 will accept that format only after you install "ClosedCaptionImporter.component", which used to be downloadable from http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#samplecode/ClosedCaptionImporter/Introdu ction/Intro.html. Now that link shows a popup saying that the project may "use deprecated symbols and illustrate technologies and techniques that are no longer recommended".

Is there another technology for captioning movies with QuickTime?
