How to restore suddenly missing 'X' to close open tabs on iMac in Safari?

The "X" which was formerly present on the left side of each open tab in Safari when I moved the cursor there and which I would click on to close an open tab has suddenly gone missing. Somehow when I turned my iMac on today I had lost this functionality. Now I cannot easily close an open tab in Safari and have to open a drop down menu in order to close an open tab. This is both annoying and time-consuming. On my Macbook Air I still have this functionality. I would appreciate any help you might give as to how to restore the "click-on-X-to-close" function to open tabs in Safari on my iMac. I'm running OS X 10.9.2 on the iMac. Yesterday the missing "X" function to close open tabs was there, today it's not. Thanks!
