Why has the battery prematurely died on my brand new (2013 model) MacBook Pro?

Purchased a brand new MacBook Pro 15 inch only two weeks ago. Only for it to have suddenly shut itself off today. Mavericks now tells me the battery needs replacing and isn't charging. The MacBook will obviously only now work when plugged into a power supply, and the moment you remove the Magsafe adapter it shuts off. I do have an appointment to have it looked at on Monday next week, but has anyone else come across this, and know of any fixes I can do at home that don't involve me destroying my warranty?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Take it back to Apple and ask them to replace it.

There is absolutely no reason you should even attempt to fix it. About the only thing you will be able to do is void your warranty.

Yeah, I'm hoping they'll just replace it on Monday at the Apple Store. They did that with an iPhone of mine once.

This shows you how to reset the system management controller. It's a reset that resolves many power-based issues like the issue you're having. Good Luck!
