Kernel task eating memory

My kernel task is taking up tons of memory. Earlier today, my memory (16Gb) was entirely RED and my fans were going (rare, as I have an SSD). I restarted and now it's 1/2 green. Normally, my memory runs 3/4 green. Something is amiss, and my computer is slowing down.

Two things happened recently: I upgraded to EndNOte x7.1. This was a huge disaster. I ended up having to trash all preference files for EndNOte. Also, Papers keeps crashing, and it, too, is taking up TONS of memory.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks! Amy
