Can't send or receive imessages

I'm having trouble sending or receiving imessages on my iphone 4. I am currently overseas, and have no cellular reception, but am connected to WiFi. I have successfully used imessage when connected to the same WiFi connection a few months ago. My iphone is fully updated, and I have unsuccessfully followed the messages troubleshooting guide. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
