I bought a new phone, and I am trying to restore the backup from my old phone onto my computer. I plugged it in to find that I can't get into my original phone because it's password protected. How do I get pass the password?

It's not clear which password you mean. Is it a backup password? Screen lock password on the old phone. Apple ID password?

In that case the only thing you can do is guess until you have no more guesses and restore it again. Either as new or from a backup without the passcode on the device.
The thing is, I can't get into my old phone because the screen is broken.. How can I enter the password, or get around the password?
Did you previously have it set up to back your old phone up to iCloud or iTunes automatically?
How would I find out if I did?
Do you have a windows computer or a mac? Also do you have the icloud control panel downloaded to your computer?
I have a Mac, and I don't think that I have the icloud control panel on my computer.
You can check in system preferences by clicking on the Apple in the top left hand corner of your screen. Also with itunes open click on itunes in the top left hand corner and select preferences. You will get the general preferences window and you will want to select the devices tab. That will tell you if you have any previous backups of your device.
Also, you can try and use spotlight to search for icloud control panel too by searching for icloud.
I don't have any previous backups... I'm trying to back up my new phone to the way it was, but can't get pass my password because I can't use my screen.. Is there a way to get around the password?
Unfortunately if your screen is unresponsive then no, only thing you can hope for is that you had already created a backup with one of the two methods above. iCloud or iTunes
I would try to restore from an iCloud backup at this point, worst case it says there isn't one when you sign in with your apple id.
