is it possible to back up my ipad air contents directly to a usb hard drive while I'm travelling? I understand that this content can be stored in iCloud, but am asking this queestion on behlaf of an older relative who wants an alternative to iCloud

I was wondering if it is at all possible to back up ipad air contents directly to usb external hard drive while travelling. I understand that this is possible to do via i-cloud, but an older relative is asking if there is an alternative to online storage, and I'm underqualified to answer :-)
