iPhoto Library is a Package / Missing Pictures

Hello,

I migrated my data from my old Mac to my new one and iPhoto doesn't seem to work anymore. When I open it, it says the library should be upgraded and when I click, "upgrade", iPhoto closes.

My iPhoto library is now a package; when I try to open it, it opens Terminal, with the message

MacBook albertine: albertine (some other signs I don't know how to type, but you get the gist)

I downloaded iPhoto library manager and I can see all my files but many of them appear as white pages - if I click on them, I get the name, the info, the size, but when I open them with preview I get a blank sign and the name is always "missing.tiff". I tried to rebuild the library with Manager, but there are still entire albums and the pictures they contained that are missing.

I also downloaded iPhoto Library upgrader and it says my library doesn't need to be upgraded - I cannot open it with upgrader anyway.

If anyone has any suggestion, that'd be grand 😀

Sorry but you actually have to provide information - not just problems

What version of iPhoto and of the OS did you have? What version of each do you now have?

Exactly how did you"migrate your data" data to the new system? -- the correct way is Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

to change the program associated with your iPhoto library right click on the ihoto library and select "Open in ==> iPhoto)

Hello,

Thank you for your answer.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure what version of iPhoto and what version of the OS I used - I believe it was Mountain Lion, but I'm not sure about the version (I cannot check because the keyboard and trackpad of my old computer don't work anymore so I cannot log into the computer). I wasn't using the latest version of iPhoto either.

Current version of iPhoto is 9.5.1 and OS is Mavericks 10.9.2

I migrated my data using my latest TimeMachine backup which was on an external hard drive.

When I right click to open the library with iPhoto, iPhoto opens with a prompt saying the library should be upgraded and when I click, "upgrade", iPhoto closes within one or two seconds.

I'm not sure if this will work but it's worth a try:

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

  • Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch. The free demo version is all you need.
  • Click on the Add Library button,

    User uploaded file

and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.

  • Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option

  • User uploaded file

  • In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
  • Click on the Create button.

  • Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.

Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

First, thank you for your help, and I'm sorry to be such a huge pain, but I tried that too:

The weird thing is that some of the pictures that do not appear in the iLibrary package (let's say that no pictures from year 2005 appear in the iLibrary package) are listed in the default library, but they appear as blank pages. There's file info for each file (size, date, etc), but when I rebuild, they're left out, as they are from the iLibrary package. So those missing pictures seem to be "somewhere", but I cannot locate them.

I checked on the old hard drive, opening iPhoto on my old computer with a tech, and all the pics are there, they're just not on my TM backups.

The following will create a library with all of the orignial files that are in the Masters/Originals folder of your library. You can then compare the number of photos and photos themselves to see if this new library has all your photos:

Starting over from scratch with new library

Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:

    1. Open the library package like this.

    User uploaded file

    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.

    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.

    User uploaded file

This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
