Devices will not sync with iTunes.

I am running iTunes 11.1.5 with a 3rd Gen iPad and iPhone 5s both with upto date 7.1. I have been having this issue for a few months, but now I really want to get it going.

When I pulg into iTunes they both begin to sync like normal and go through 6 out of the 7 steps. When it reaches the last step an error box pops up and says:

"The iPhone"--" can not be synced. An unknown error has ocurred. (-50)"

It does this every time, even if I try WiFi sync. I have read someother forums that suggested cycling power to the Mac, and the devices. Hard shutdowns to both but nothing has worked.
