Cannot enter an event on calendar

How can an event be added to a calendar? Every time that I enter the info for an event and press "return" per the instructions, my event disappears.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I have the same issue and this high level overview provides no answers. I've had my MacBook Pro for 3 years and it started doing this in the last 3 months...
