Moving iTunes (old format) to different computer with new iTunes format

My main iTunes music, etc., is located on my older XP computer and is stored in the older iTunes format, with everything located in the iTunes Music folder. I now want to move all of it to a newer Windows 7 laptop, which already has iTunes (new format) on it, along with some random music that can be deleted. I will be getting rid of the XP computer. I've read and read about making this move, to the point of being scared to death I'm going to do something wrong and mess it all up completely.

On the old computer, under Preferences/Advanced, I checked both top boxes (one was not before) and also organized the library. When I tried to consolidate, nothing appeared to happen. After doing this, I copied my whole iTunes folder to an external hard drive (by simply dragging). Since then I've set up file sharing between the 2 computers, so I think I could probably copy from machine to machine in that way, too, if easier. What's throwing me is the transition from iTunes Music to iTunes Media--when and how will that happen? How do I proceed from here, please? The migraine is beginning...

Thank you, thank you, thank you in advance...

PS: When this is finished, can I sync my iPod Touch and iPad2 to the laptop without any adjustments there?

Windows XP, ...to Windows 7

Hi debbiefrommorris,

Welcome to the Support Communities!

Making a copy of your entire Music folder to an external hard drive is an excellent first step. The instructions below will explain the step-by-step process for moving the music to your new computer. I would suggest following the instructions in the External Drive option. Your new computer will need to be authorized for iTunes. If you are getting rid of your XP computer, you will want to de-authorize it. Be sure to back up your iPod touch and iPad2 to iCloud before syncing to your computer. You may be prompted to erase the data to sync with the new library.

Once iTunes is installed, click on the Store command on the menu bar, and sign in to your account using your Apple ID and password.

If you haven't already done so at some point use the option File > Library > Organize Library > Rearrange files. This puts your library in the modern "shape" where a few folders move from being inside the main iTunes folder into the media folder and the artist folders move into <Media Folder>\Music. Once that is done you may also like to close iTunes and rename iTunes Music as iTunes Media then restart. iTunes should automatically readjust for this change which completes the transformation to the modern layout. This will make it easier to place the library inside the <User's Music> folder on the new computer which will be at a different path from the XP box.
