Q: Aperture not playing some videos

I love the Genius Bar.  They have helped me so much in the past.  Today they didn't, so I'm posting this question:

I have a 27" iMac running OSX 10.9.2.  I am using Aperture 3.5.1.

All of a sudden, some videos stopped working.  Some still work.  Brought the computer to Genius Bar and the guy couldn't find anything wrong with it.  He told me that I can "repair" Aperture by quitting it and then holding down "command + option" and double click on Aperture and then a window opens up and there are three levels of repairing.  He told me to do this at home as it could take hours.  I brought the computer home and started with the first level and it didn't work.  Did the second and third level and it didn't solve the problem.  And, by the way, it took minutes per level not hours.

So, when I'm looking at my pix/videos, I like to look at them in filmstrip view.  The first screenshot below shows a video that I've highlighted a video on the filmstrip and the video appears in the bigger window ready to play.  The second screenshot shows that I've highligthed the next video in the filmstrip and the image doesn't show up in the larger window above.

The guy at the store suggests that because no error message shows up, it could just be an error occurring between Aperture and the file.  I tried the three leves of "repair" and it didn't fix the problem.  The Genius Bar said that if the three levels don't work, I need to bring it back in and they can create a new library and copy over the whole library into the new one.  Before I lug this giant 27" iMac back to the Genius Bar, I was wondering if anyone out there can help.

What can I do?

Thanks,

Mark

And, I'll be fine doing the long version of fixing this problem (dragging each video that doesn't work to the desktop, opening in quicktime, saving as a different name on desktop, and then re-importing into Aperture) except that it changes the creation date of the picture!  So if I sort pictures by date, these pictures will be considered created today.

Is there a way to change the creation date?  I went to "Info" and IPTC Core and was able to change the date there, but then when I viewed the picture in filmstrip mode, the date still says today.

Can no one solve my problem?

I was able to change the date by going to Metadata > Adjust Date & Time, but it wouldn't let me change "original file" date.  Do I need to change that?  Am I crazy to not accept that as a workaround and just do it?

All I want is for all my videos to work in Aperture again and for them to have the original film date attached to it so that I can look at the videos chronologically.

    Please help.

Do you have the latest iPhoto, and do you still have the iPhoto library that you had when you switched to using Aperture.  If so, you can simply open it with Aperture directly and test.  This requires that said iPhoto Library was at some time updated by the latest version of iPhoto.

I avoid dragging things around between apps where Aperture and Package libraries are concerned.

Ernie, I have the same experience as Mark had. It happens on most MOV videos I believe. Was this fixed? Can you help me?

I am doing the exact turn-around = exporting on QT.

I have everything updated to latest latest version and I am running 10.10.5 on a MacBook Pro 13'' (Mid 2012), 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, 16GB RAM.

    Thanks in advance!

I myself never had a similar problem, not can I say anything was ever established as broken (and needing a fix to software).  Are you reporting that you cannot simply import a video shot on your camera directly into Aperture and have it function properly?

    Hi.

I have exactly the same thing. I use oftenly my DSLR camera (Nikon D3200). In Aperture I can not see the videos. Same happens on mp4 / mov movies in Aperture. I have to use iPhoto to watch them... but then, I cannot use again the library in Aperture. A complete nightmare.
