Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

How do i stop the app store from prompting me to update Pages?

I don't want to update to the new version of Pages until they make the Maverick version as fullscale as 4.3.

Call me cranky, but I find the incessant update notifications annoying.

Thanks in advance

But that's simply not true. There are many functions that are extremely important to business users that are NOT found in the new version at all... not just relocated. Apple did DROP features from the new version to downscale it and make it comparable with iPads and phones. Even items that were moved... then Why? Just to frustrate users? And for gods sake, who's idea was it to leave out something as basic as "save as"? Yes, I know by hitting a command button and rolling your mouse over the "File" functions, you can get it to return... but why? Why make it difficult on your customers?

The problem with "leaving the old version" is that you can't tell the OS that the old version is the default for opening files. It just resets it with each successive update. So the simple act of double clicking on a file name can not only open the wrong program but it could destroy your file if you're not aware of it.

It is not "freaking out" to want version 4 so that you can actually use the functions that don't exist in version 5.

See.. that's where you're wrong. You can't accept that users have had documents destroyed by accidentally letting PAGES update them to version 5. If you have worked with large documents and watched as Pages 5 scrambles the data beyond recognition, you wouldn't say something as uninformed as your last comment.

The fact is that we've had to pull data out of time machine backups to correct the documents that were completely unusable due to PAGES 5. As a business owner and someone who has created dozens of large documents in PAGES it is not exaggeration... it's fact. Our company operations manual was utterly in shambles due to PAGES. Fortunately we keep backups off site.

Lol.... wow...I see now that people with the little points tag are really just Apple employees. Fact. You're wrong. You can't "export" them back into '09 to recover them. And love your "for the most part" comment. pretty childish. Business users need business equipment not cell phone text editors. After I lost a nearly 200 page operations manual and had to go digging out the backup network drives to restore PAGES failure, It was clear that upgrading to 5 isn't worth it until the FIX the problems... not just shout down people who point out the problems.

I can see that shining the light of truth on people that don't want to know the truth is a waste of time. You obviously haven't experienced the corruption of large numbers of files due to PAGES updating and overwriting (without telling you they were "overwriting") the files.

Frankly , you're welcome to your narrow point of view. But from the ratings PAGES is getting and from the number of complaints, it's pretty obvious that Apple screwed the pooch on this one.

Yes, you can. Anything that is not supported in the new version, like hyperlinks and bookmarks, will not be restored. But the document can be reverted.

I'm not sure why you deny that.

I see you conceded the argument by calling everyone who disagrees with you names. You can't defend your argument, so you start name calling.

Aug 29, 2014 5:04 PM in response to Barney-15E

I'm not denying it... I'm stating it openly that you are wrong and totally uninformed. IT WILL NOT BE RESTORED WHEN IT WAS OVERWRITTEN BY THE NEW VERSION FINISHED... FINALE ...GONE You can live in your fantasy world that a scrambled file that is autosaved, overwriting the previous version can magically be "restored" but you're wrong.... incorrect, uninformed and you have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm not calling you names. I'm stating the fact that you are uninformed and you are incorrect.

If you open a previous version file; a large document with dozens of chapters, graphics and page layouts that version 5 doesn't translate correctly .... then close the file after discovering version 5 has scrambled it .... when you close the document, version 5 will autosave without asking you.... thus, OVERWRITING YOUR FILE WITH THE CORRUPT VERSION. You then cannot go back without reformatting the entire document. To say that it can be "reverted" is simply not true. So you can keep living in that fantasy all you want. It doesn't make it true.

If "magic reversions" could be made, why would so many people be having the exact same problem. Apple (and obviously you as well) want to live in denial that version 5 is a downgrade.

Sorry, but you can open the file in Pages 5 and export to Pages '09. I've done it. It is only you who is uninformed.

You must be one of those Microsloth trolls that just comes in to bash Apple. Are you being paid by Microsoft?

Aug 29, 2014 5:26 PM in response to Barney-15E

YES .... FOR GOD'S SAKE YES... IF YOU START A NEW FILE FROM SCRATCH IN VERSION 5 YOU CAN EXPORT IT TO PAGES 09..... . BUT YOU CANNOT RESURRECT A FILE THAT HAS BEEN OVERWRITTEN BY PAGES 5. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS REVERTING TO THE OLD VERSON ONCE THE NEW VERSION OVERWRITES THE FILE ..... DO YOU NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO A FILE THAT IS OVERWRITTEN???? SINCE YOU CLEARLY AREN'T GETTING THIS....LET ME EXPLAIN IT.... THE NEW FILE OVERWRITES THE OLD FILE.... THUS THE OLD FILE DOESN'T EXIST ANY MORE. WHAT PART OF THAT DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?

"Bash" Apple???? I have two iMacs, four Macbook Pros, one Macbook Air, and four iPads. I use PAGES every day.. But I will not upgrade to a version that is less functional and one that overwrites your old files once you open them.

God, I'm done talking to you ... you clearly do not want to learn anything. Maybe when you grow up you'll understand how a computer works

Again, you are wrong, twice.

I took a Pages '09 file, opened it in 5, Saved it, then quit. I reopened it in 5 and exported to Pages '09. Surprise, it opened fine in Pages '09.

God, I'm done talking to you ... you clearly do not want to learn anything. Maybe when you grow up you'll understand how a computer works

What's the matter. I thought that's how you wanted to play this game. You insult me, defend your actions, then get all upset when I insult you? That's really illogical behavior. If you didn't want to be insulted, maybe you shouldn't have done it, then defended it.

Aug 30, 2014 3:14 AM in response to Barney-15E

Again.... for the last time since you obviously want to argue and defend Pages 5 rather than get to the point which is:

OUR FILES WERE CORRUPTED AND SCRAMBLED WHEN 5 OPENED THEM ..... THUS THEY WERE SAVED IN A SCRAMBLED FORM.... THUS ANY ATTEMPT TO REVERT THEM, KEPT THEM SCRAMBLED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and AGAIN what part of that don't you understand? There are thousands of people who had the same problem. There are thousands of complaints to Apple about that problem. Good for you that you didn't have that problem with your simple files. But I and thousands of other people lost valuable time and in some cases valuable work due to the problem. The problem IF YOU WOULD HAVE LISTENED!!!! Was in large format documents with numerous chapters and page layout variations. It occurred more often with templates designed by the user and not the stock layouts that came with Pages. You would have read all of that if you would have listened to the people posting their concerns and complaints. But you don't seem to want to listen to anyone but yourself.

IF YOU OPENED AN OLD FILE AND IT WAS SIMPLY TEXT WITH NO LAYOUT AND NO FORMATTING... AND IT WAS FINE..... YES, THEN YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO REVERT THE FILE.... BUT NOT IF IT WAS SCRAMBLED BY 5 WHEN IT OPENED IT.

It's pretty clear that you work for Apple and don't want to listen to your customers. That's fine. But it still doesn't change the fact that people found their work destroyed.

And you've never addressed all the items that are still missing in the downscaled version of Pages. .... No vertical ruler, no variable kerning, no more "inspector" block.... yes. I tried my best to work under the limitations of the new version. And like many other people, I chose to go back to the more functional version.

LOL>.... that's a good one... So what your saying is that the thousands of posts complaining about the very same issues are ALL people who are wrong.... and YOU... The Mighty Csound1, keeper of the level 8 granted by Apple, are right.... everyone else is wrong.

I think you need to read the ratings, read the complaints, and read the resulting problems this version created. It's not just me. So go back to your mummies' basement and play with your xbox. Let the adults handle things from here.

I did address that long ago, as did Apple. It isn't a finished product. They are working on it and will release new versions with additional features as they become ready. They left the "more functional version" installed for that reason.

I have no idea why your formatting was destroyed. None of my documents suffered any formatting corruption. Pictures, tables, section breaks all survived.

There's still no answer to the question here. After trying it several times on backup versions of files, I decided I don't want Pages 5. I uninstalled it two days ago and used Get Info to make all my Pages documents once again open with Pages 2009.

Now the App Store wants to install it again, and I don't want it. Ctrl-clicking on the application name takes me to the app page, where there is no option not to download it. Ctrl-clicking on the Update button starts the download process. I'm not seeing any way to tell the App Store that I don't want this product. I don't want to have to keep delaying downloads to tomorrow every day, and I don't want to have to keep downloading and uninstalling Pages 5 every time there's some other new update available.

So, whatever you think of my choice to stick with Pages 2009 rather than using Pages 5, can someone please tell me how to stop the App Store from tring to force me to download and install this app update?

How do i stop the app store from prompting me to update Pages?
