my "mail" does not work

Hi all!

i'm a new macbook pro user and i have a problem with the "mail" application. i cannot open or close it from the dock.That means i cannot restart or switch off the macbook.what do u suggest?thank u

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Force Quit .


Press command + option + esc keys together at the same time for 3 seconds. Wait.


When Force Quit window appears, select the application if not already.

Press Force Quit button at the bottom of the window. Wait.


Application will quit.


If this does not help, press the power button for 7 or more seconds.


Computer will shut down.


Restart.
