No storage location set in iMovie and Final Cut Pro X

Hi!

I am trying to import videos from a Sony camera with a hard drive (AVCHD format) to the new version of iMovie and continually get this loop. The only way out is to force quit, shut down the computer and start again. I still get the same error. This did not happen on the old version which luckily I still had in my applications.

In desperation I down loaded a trial version of Final Cut Pro X and got the same error loop. Luckily I did not spend the $375 for the program.

Has anyone overcome this problem or is there a way to cheat to get around it.

Thanks.

What camera exactly. Post screen shot of the import window with exact error message. Where is the library you're working with? Repair permission in the Disk Utility,.

The camera that I am trying to import is Sony HDR-XR520VE. In the import, the clips show up in the list, the Import all comes up, it prepares the clips, then this no storage loop comes up and there is no way to circumvent it except to force quit. The main problem is that there are over 4000 clips on the hard drive from my husband's recent 8 week trip to the USA. I did manage to download a few by using Import selected clips but when I went back to do it again the no storage loop came up. It is so frustrating because I can import the the whole hard drive in the old version of iMovie with no trouble. I store the videos on a 2TB external drive and have another 2TB for backup plus an Apple 3TB Time capsule.

It has to be an Apple software problem as there are many people having the same problem. I have CS5 Adobe Premier but I usually use the old version of iMovie as it is easy to use and I am trying to get my husband to do the editing himself!

Any help greatly appreciated,

Lorraine

Dear Tom,

This happens in Final Cut Pro X and iMovie 10.9.2.

I tried it on both before doing the screens shots.

Thanks for any assistance,

Hi Tom!,

I think that I am the admin user as I am the only person who uses this computer.

The 3 2TB hardrives are connected through a UBS link.

The thing is that the old version of iMovie 9.0.9 imported these files with no problem it is the updated version of iMovie 10.9.2 and Final Cut Pro X that is having a problem.

This shows how the version just took in the movies no problem:User uploaded file

I do not seem to be the only person with this problem from the posts but nothing that has been suggested seem to fix the problem.

Thanks again for your help,

Lorraine

I did a test with the old version of iMovie and I can import to the Mac, book 2 & 3 and to the Toshiba and interchange files between them and save to them, so I am assuming that I have permission and access to the drives. I have checked that there is plenty of space available.

Is there any other way of checking permission on the drives and what other drive information do I need to check?

I am setting up the new user but it takes about an hour plus to import the files, and another hour to prepare the clips so I may not get back to you today.

Thanks for all your help,

Lorraine

You check permissions in the Finder. Select the drive or folders and use command-I.

You don't need to import a lot if video to test it. New user. No external drives. This shouldn't take long. Need to find out if there is a problem with the application or your setup.

Never answered questions about the drives. You gave three USB drives. Do you have three USB ports on your computer?

Hi again Tom,

I have read and write permission on all my drives.

I have four USB ports, My Book 2 - still photos, My Book 3 - Videos are plugged into two of these ports.

The Toshiba 2TB is plugged into a powered USB hub in the next port. I use this hub to plug in the camera.

The fourth USB point is for an unpowered hub for my printer and scanner.

I am sorry but I have a guest and a test user but in each of these I do not get imovie or Final Cut Pro.

How do I setup a new user?

Thanks,

Lorraine

What do you mean you do not get iMovie or Final Cut Pro? The applications are in the Applications folder, correct? When you open Launchpad in the test user, you can find FCP, correct?

Please remove ALL external devices, especially that USB hub.

Go to the test user. Launch the application. Press Cmd-I. Select any media file anywhere on your computer and click Import. Select leave in place. Does the file import into the application? Report back if not.

If yes, connect the 2TB drive to one USB port. Do not connect any other devices, drives, printers, scanners, anything to the computer (except keyboard and mouse). Launch the application. Make a new library on the 2TB drive. Insert the camera card into the card reader. Select the empty event and click Import. Select the camera card. Select a clip. Click import. What happens?

Dear Tom,

I am sorry that I am only just getting back to you but one of my best friends died in colombo in sri lanka so I have been busy arranging things in Australia.

I can import one selected clip in Test user but while still in Test Used and as the camera does not have any videos on a card so I tried using the camera attached, and got the same loop. I then downloaded the videos from the camera on to the mac hard drive and tried to import the videos and got the same loop.

I really feel like giving up.

Thanks for any further ideas,

Lorraine
