Safari is putting a drain on my RAM. What can I do to fix this?

Every time I use Safari it puts a major drain on my Memory. I have a Macbook Pro running OSX 10.9.2 and i have Safari Version 7.0.3, this does not happen with Firefox, but I really prefer to use Safari. I have gone into my library to look in my Internet Plug-ins and Input methods but both folders appear to be empty.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

)tFron your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab.

Deselect: Allow Plug-ins

Quit then relaunch Safari then monitor RAM in the Activity Monitor.

If that made a difference, there are two Internet Plug-Ins libraries. One is your Home folder ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins

The other is root: /Library/Internet Plug-Ins

(Note the ~ Tilde character represents your Home folder).

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Your problem has nothing to do with RAM. Mavericks is designed to fill your RAM if at all possible, to help your machine to run faster. Empty RAM is wasted RAM.

As for a potential cause for the problem, I see you have McAfee installed. McAfee is pretty thoroughly worthless on a Mac, with plenty of potential to cause performance issues while only detecting 53% of the Mac malware I threw at it when I last tested it in January. See:

http://www.thesafemac.com/mac-anti-virus-testing-2014/

You need to remove McAfee immediately, using the McAfee uninstaller that should be found in the Applications folder. If you do not find such an uninstaller, you will need to contact McAfee about how to remove it.

I'm having the same issue.

When i open Safari this happens.

I am doing nothing in Safari except a bit of surfing.

It happens reliaby like this every time I open Safari.

Everything is fine for about a min and then the Memory spikes and I have to force quit.

Not having an issue with other browers
