Outgoing email goes to Draft instead of Sent

For the past couple of months I have been getting sporadic, buggy behaviour from Apple Mail.

Basically, I draft an email. I hit send. No error message, all looks find. Except that I find out the recipient never received the email. And instead of sitting in Sent it is sitting in Draft where it has been since I originally hit sent.

I can then open the draft but am unable to hit send or save as draft (both greyed out) and can only close the email at which point I am prompted to save.

I can then usually open the draft again, and am able to send at that point. Sometimes I need to repeat the last step a few times before I can send.

Generally then it goes out without a hitch.

There are NEVER any error messages or apparent reasons for the behaviour.

Many times, I draft an email and hit send and it sends without problem - so the problem is erratic. It has upped in priority for me recently for the bug has a creepy ability lately to sniff out important, time-sensitive emails and hit THEM. I thought it might be connected to the length of time I spent editing, since the frustrating occurrences lately have been with lengthy emails.

However, on inspecting my Drafts folder, I found many surprisingly unsent emails. Some short, some long. Some with attachments, some without. All of these should have gone out weeks ago when (I originally though) I sent them.

I haven't run into trouble with Mail before this and I am at a loss with how to debug or accommodate this issue further.

Any thoughts?

Will.

First of all, you shouldn't assume that a message has not been sent just because a copy of it remains in Drafts. For some reason, Mail sometimes fails to remove the draft copy after having successfully sent the message.

Secondly, there is an issue related to Launch Services that, amongst other symptoms, causes the Send button to do nothing when clicked, but I'm not sure whether that's the behavior you observe...

What type of account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?

It is a POP account - in each case where it has occurred and I have noted it, so far.

I know that (in each case I have noted) the email has NOT been received. I am presuming it has not been sent since it does not appear in the Sent folder, the recipient did not receive AND it remains in the Draft folder. I think that is fair evidence 🙂

hat's how I noticed the problem in the first place. Folks would comment they never heard back from me when I thought that I had emailed them a day or so ago.

The draft copy is also kinda odd, as I mentioned. Its "behaviousr" including the ability / inability to be sent - is strange and erratic.

Does that clarify the problem?

Will.

This looks like the Launch Services issue I mentioned in my previous post, except for the fact that it's erratic, but I would try the same possible solution nevertheless. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services -- the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:

Resetting Launch Services

If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, this other article provides links to some utilities that can be used for troubleshooting and cache cleaning:

Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption

It seems that the most appropriate utility for solving this particular problem is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:

Side effects of System cache cleaning

As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:

1. Quit all applications.
2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
3. Click Maintenance. In the Reset section, check LaunchServices database.
4. You may uncheck any other pre-checked options if you wish.
5. Click the Execute button.
6. Restart the computer.
7. If the problem persists, try again checking the Links between documents and applications option in step 3 instead.

Hi David,

Thank you so much!

I did download Onyx and skipped right ahead to running most of the "cleaning". Maybe not the best for diagnosing the specific problem, but efficient 🙂

Also might have cleared up a sporadic problem with my hidden files becoming "unhidden" pretty regularly.

Both problems were erratic, so I will leave the question open for a bit until I feel comfortable calling the matter closed.

Thanks again!
Will.

Do you have any Mail plugins? Do you have either a /Library/Mail/Bundles or a ~/Library/Mail/Bundles folder in the Finder?

Go to System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. What do you see there?

In the Finder, go to /Library/StartupItems/. What do you see there?

Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

Yes, as a matter fo fact, I do.

Under ~Library/Mail/Bundles I have DayLiteMailIntegration.mailbundle

which integrates Mail with MarketCircle's DayLite application/

I have three "panels" of startup items:

Do you expect that the problem is here?
