I am unable to open iPhoto on my mac since updated

I am unable to open my iPhoto since i believe there has been updates installed automatically onto my iMac.

I get a message that says "you can't use this version of the application iPhoto with this version of OS X. You have "iPhoto 9.2.1""

My iMac is OS X 10.9.2.. I can see in my updates for apps there needs to be an update for iPhoto done, however it won't allow me to update.

Is there a way I can "undo" the install without losing my photos?

I want to backup and restore my iPhone but I can't without the iPhoto working.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

@Terence Devlin, thank you for this info, it is helpful. Also @Linc Davis....

I am unable to update my iPhoto through the updates. It says the update isnt available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.

When I got the computer, it had iPhoto on it already, so I am a tad confused about it being bought by a different user.

Is there another way around it? I am worried I lose all of my images - good thing is I still have them on my phone, though I do need to restore it.

Please test after each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.

Step 1

Select the Purchases page in the App Store and locate the app(s) in your purchase history. If there's a button markedACCEPT on the right, click it.

Step 2

If you're trying to update iLife or iWork apps that were installed from a purchased DVD, or if you have a refurbished Mac bought directly from Apple, contact App Store customer service for a redemption code. You may be asked for the part number of the DVD.

Step 3

From the App Store menu bar, select

Store ▹ View My Account

Enter your Apple ID password at the prompt. At the lower right corner of the window that opens, click the Reset button. Close the window.

Step 4

If you have a used Mac, the bundled apps were linked to the original owner's Apple ID and can't be transferred to you. Reportedly, customer service has issued redemption codes to some second owners who asked, but it's not guaranteed.

Step 5

Delete the app(s) you want to update and reinstall them.

If I rebuild the iPhoto library, will I lose everything? - Sorry, I am not great with Mac's, still getting the hang of it and learning how to use like a PC.

No you will not need lose anything, besides you have backup don't you? At any rate you need to follow Linc's suggestion to update to the most up-to-date version of iPhoto.
