Macbook doesn't recognize my earphone microphone?

I'm using my iPhone earphone set with the built in microphone. On the phone the microphone is recognized, but for the macbook, i cannot find the earphone option in the INPUT section. I have reset my laptop, unplugged/replugged my earphones and it still does not work. I can hear through the headphones and it still is not working. The "use audio port for: INPUT" is turned on but its still not working.
