Hi,

I have an Airport extreme base station, two 1st generation Airport Express units and 2 2nd generation Airport Express units.

Currently I only have the 2 2nd generation units in service.

I have some wireless speakers that I would like to use outside on my patio this spring and summer.

Currently the reception/signal isn't very good outside.

I was wondering, is it possible to extend my network using one of the 1st generation units if it can be "connected" to a 2nd generation unit or does the 1st generation unit only work as extending the base station signal?

Help appreciated,

Regards,

Jim P.

If you are asking if the 1st Gen Express can pick up and extend a signal from a 2nd Gen Express that is already extending the network, the answer would be no.

That is because Apple will only allow the network to be wirelessly extended one time, or one level.

You can have multiple extenders, but each extender must connect directly to the main base station, not to another device that is already extending the network.

Ironically, you could connect an Ethernet cable from the LAN <-> port on a 2nd Gen Express to a 1st Gen Express and then set up the 1st Gen Express to "create" a wireless network using the same wireless network name, security and password as your main network. Then, the 1st Gen would act as an extender.
