How can I use iPhoto with dual monitors?

Depends on many things you fail to share
what version of iPhoto? Is OS X 10.8.4 as you report correct for your OS? What exactly do want to do with the second monitor? Are you using it now wh other programs? If so what specific proglems do you have when you try to use it with iPhoto?

This is my first Mac and I bought it new a week ago. It's running the latest version of Mavericks and iPhoto. I don't know why it reports above that I am using Mountain Lion. It looks like I am running OSX 10.9.2. I would like to have my full collection of photos on the left monitor and open up a photo for editing on the right. It happened once but I can't get it to do it again. I don't know how it happened.
iPhoto can only have one window open at a time. So what you want to do is not possible.
However, if you use a 3rd party editor like Photoshop; from within iPhoto it's window might be able to be opened in the second monitor.
But using iPhoto alone it's not possible.

You're correct. I now realize I was using another editor (Nikon View) and was able to have the tiles on one monitor and edit a photo on the other. Thanks. I guess I will be using Nikon View.
