Hi,
The App logs in to the FaceTime Server, which is separate from the iCloud and iMessages or Mail ones, even if it is using an iCloud ID.
This is done on a what is called a port over the internet.
In total there are 65535 ports (think of it like a mega set of TV channels).
Those below 1024 are open in most routing devices by default.
FaceTime uses two ports below this threshold to login.
One checks the ID's password on port 443 and the other keeps look out about who is On Line on port 80.
To do the Video Chat bit the app moves to ports above the 1024 threshold.
It is most like that the router is not allowing these ports.
These are the ports in Question http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4245
If the device has UPnP it will be simpler to Enable this.

Hi,
Thank you for your help but I don't really understand the technicall side of things I just use the mac for work and socially. I have a better idea on the Ports for face time, but I don't understand how to enable the correct ports or what I need to do in order for faverome to work
properly. It is very confusing for me so I might have to take it to the apple store. I thought it would be more simpler, like to enable something in settings or something?
Thank you for your help,
Christie
Hi,
If the Mac Firewall is ON then you have to go to the Option button and Allow Specific apps.
("Allow Signed Software" and adding them to the list make them Signed Software).
If you router is not allowing some ports it can act like a Hardware firewall.
After that it can get confusing as there are different methods of opening ports (About 4 ) some of which only work for one IP (Computer) and lock others out of using those ports.
UPnP is away that is an On/Off setting and allows multiple devices to use the same ports (So, FaceTime would then work on an Mac, iPad and iPhone if you have them).
An Apple Store would be abe to check it is not the app itself and set the Firewall for you if you desired.
I then suggest people visit this site http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm
Port Forwarding is one way of Opening ports.
However before it gets that far the site tell you the default Access User ID and password.
On the Page I linked find the Brand of router and click it.
The following page is an Advert page with a Click me to Proceed link. Use that.
It will then list the Models that manufacturer makes.
Find your Model and click on it.
Choose AIM Talk in the Games and Application Page.
This is an example of a Linksys Page.
If you scroll up and down you will see that are 4 Screen Shots with this set up.
Part of the page looks like this (About logging on to the router) around the first two pictures.
The IP address of the router can be seen in System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > TCP/IP under the "Router IP"
You will notice the page also tells you what the default most likely is.
It then says you will see a pop up for your Browser asking for the User ID and Password and tell you the defaults.
At this point you want to ignore the rest of the Instructions and look for UPnP.
If you have a Apple Base station of Any sort then use the Airport Utility in Applications/Utilities and enable Port Mapping Protocol (Apple's equivalent of UPnP).
