How to transfer pictures from a memory disk to new iPhoto

I bought a mac in '09 and recently it stopped working so I bought a new mac pro. However I didnt back up anything in my old mac so I went to an IT store and had them retrieve all my documents and pictures. They gave me this toshiba memory disk? - idk what they are called- with a USB port and everything is there except I cannot open the folder that has my pictures from iphoto. I am guessing because the new version of iphoto is not compatible with the older one I had. Any solution or suggestions would be helpful. Thank you!

How did the IT store recover your data? What is the format of the folder with your photos? If it is just a folder, you cannot open it directly in iPhoto. Does this folder show the iPhoto "fan of pictures" icon, or does it show as a simple folder? Can you browse the contents in the Finder? What is inside?

If it is simply a folder with photos, use "File > Import" in iPhoto to import the photos into events.

They recovered the data by putting it in a storage disk. There is a regular folder named "Pictures" and in that folder there is an icon called Iphoto Library. This icon is a picture of a pink flower with a green background. When I try to open it, Iphoto opens and then it says that I need to upgrade Iphoto and when I click OK another pop up says there in an error and it quits the app.

This looks like they indeed recovered a complete iPhoto Library.

If you look at the folder in column view you should be able to see the version number:

User uploaded file

I'd copy the iPhoto Library to your internal drive, to your "Pictures" folder. This will ensure, that the file system is compatible.

Then double-click the library there to open it in iPhoto. Does it work on your internal drive? If you still get error messages, rebuild the library. See this post by Old Toad on how to do it:
