iPhone 4S only charging while turned off. Won't connect to iTunes on my PC

Hi

I've had my iPhone 4S for over 1 year now and recently I bought a cable off of amazon (not official cable) I don't know if this could have affected the phone in anyway. It worked for around a month it still charges other devices. My phone will only charge when I plug in the charger into my phone and then turn it off. It will charge (turned off) when being plugged into a wall socket or on another device e.g. computer, PS3 etc. When I connect my device to the computer it does the connection sound to show a device is connected. However when i go onto iTunes it doesn't appear. I have looked through my installed programs and i have all of the drivers that are required and have the latest iTunes update. I have looked on my device manager and it says "Unknown USB Device (Device Desriptor Request Failed)" I know this is my iPhone as only appears on the "Unviersal Serial Bus controllers" menu when I have plugged in my phone. I don't believe its the battery as it still charges when it is off. I need to back up my data on my phone however i cannot as it will not connect to the iTunes store. I am aware i can back up using iCloud but i would like to have a back up on my computer

Help will be much appreicated

Yours

Faithfully

Mike.

Hey Hamilton12,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

You can check to see if the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed, that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed and if there are any 3rd party conflicts.

iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows

iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery

If your battery doesn't charge, or if your device shows a low-battery image, black screen, or "accessory not supported" alert, follow these steps.

  1. Inspect the connector at the bottom of the phone:
    • Make sure that there are no bent pins in the connector.
    • Make sure that the connector is free from debris.
    • If there are bent pins or debris, please contact Apple Support.
    • Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.
  2. Make sure that the outlet you're using works.
  3. Make sure that the Apple USB cable and Apple USB power adapter work.
  4. Plug the device in to power and let it charge for up to 30 minutes. If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, try connecting to a computer's high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be on.
  5. If the device still exhibits an issue, try turning your device off and then on again while connected to power.
  6. If the issue is persists, please contact Apple Support.

Have a nice day,

Mario
