I have iMac 9,1 with Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.66 GHz, L2 Cache 6 MB, Memory 2GB. Can I upgrade beyond OSX 10.5.8 on this machine?

The printer I purchased requires 10.6.

Yes. That computer can be upgraded at least as far as Mavericks 10.9.2.
